The Beers

From Belgian Abbey beers to german wheat beers, from English ales to asian lagers, from classic pilsner to irish stout we at courtneys attempt to provide an eclectic mix to entice all beer lovers.

The list is constantly updated (as will be verified by unsuspecting members of staff!)but there are a number of everpresents which are reviewed below.

Affligem (Belgium  6.8%)

A wonderful example of  a Belgian abbey beer, it is aromatic with a spice and citrus nose and a rich palate with warmth generated by the generous alcohol level.

Duvel (Belgium 8.5%)

A strong golden ale on the lees (yeast residue) having undergone a secondary fermentation in bottle. This is a dry but fruity beer which packs a devilish 8.5% punch- not for the fainthearted!

Erdinger hefe (Germany 5.3%)

Hefe translates to yeast and weissbier to wheat beer meaning a portion of malted wheat is used in addition to the malted barley. This is a light and fruity beer with a slight  tartness. A delicate interpretation of a classic style.

Budweiser budvar (Czech Republic 5%)

Far more flavoursome than its American namesake primarily because this is an all malt brew while the American one uses a large quantity of rice as an adjunct . however budvar is mellower and less hoppy than the classic Czech pilsner lagers.

Now available on draught

Tyskie (Poland 5.6%)

Tyskie is a refreshing light golden coloured beer with a wonderful malty taste and a good smattering of hop bitterness in the finish. Its popularity has transcended racial boundaries and is now enjoyed by immigrants and locals alike.

Newcastle Brown Ale (England 4.7%)

A true classic from the North of England, it.s distinctive label is recognised throughout the world. This amber coloured beer has a nutty maltiness on the nose with a full rich palate and a subtle winey aftertaste .The star on the back label turns blue if the beer is too warm!

Singha Beer (Thailand 6.0%)

The original Thai beer, it has been in existence since 1933 and is named after a mythical half-lion creature that appears on the label. Singha beer is a bright gold coloured lager with a robust hoppy tang and just a hint of fruitiness.

Franziskaner Hefe (Germany 5%)

Fruitier than a roll in the hay, franziskaner is a classic exaggeration of a Bavarian wheat beer. The “hefe” is unpasteurised, unfiltered and made without  preservatives. A touch of spice is discernable before the crisp yeasty finish. A longtime Courtneys favourite.

Coopers sparkling ale (Australia 5.8%)

Brewed and bottled in Adelaide South Australia, coopers sparkling is famous for its cloudy sediment and fruity character. A yeasty strong ale with smooth bitter flavours. Proof positive that the Aussies can do serious beer as well as wine!

O’ Haras Stout (Ireland 4.3%)

Brewed by the Carlow brewing company this award winning stout is rich, dark, full bodied and luxuriously smooth. A real alternative to the ubiquitous national brew, this wonderful creation from one of our few microbreweries deserves our support and appreciation.

Schneider Weisse Kristal (Germany 5.4%)

This is a filtered version of the “hefe” which results in a  crystal clear beer. Uniquely flavoured with vanilla and nutmeg, this is a beautifully balanced and refreshing beer. One of the original beers on our list it remains a firm favourite.

Bishops Finger (England 5.4%)

First brewed in 1958 to celebrate the end of austerity after the war. It was Shepard Neames first strong ale after 20 years of malt rationing. The first beer in the U.K. to be awarded a protective geographical indication(p.g.i.) by the E.U. It has rich fruit notes of gently roasted malts with a crisp dry finish.
